Cheap All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

This book, while simple, reminds you of the everyday occurrences that we all take for granted. Each chapter makes me grin at the end. The chapters are very short and make for quick reading. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a little smile every now and then which is hopefully everyone.Get more detail about All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Order Love and War: Finding the Marriage You've Dreamed Of

I've tried to read books on marriage in the past but have yet to finish one. When I saw that the Eldredges had written one, my first thought was "oh yuck". At the same time I was torn, because I love all their books so much that I have read every one of them at least twice! (My favorite is The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We've Only Dreamed of ) They provided the introduction for free on John's blog, so I figured it was worth a try. After reading the introductory chapter, I bought the book without hesitation. Once again, John and Stasi have precisely identified reality. There is nothing phony in these people, and reading a book by them makes me feel as if I have had a long serious talk with very wise and honest friends.Get more detail about Love and War: Finding the Marriage You've Dreamed Of.

Where To Buy The Financial Peace Planner: A Step-by-Step Guide to Restoring Your Family's Financial Health

I bought all three of these books for our children in hopes they would use Dave Ramsey's thinking and put it in action while they are still young. The way things look they will not have any social security to fall back on. But also I hope it shows them that they do not have to play the keeping up with the Jones's game, to be content with what you have and live within your means. I truely feel that if you can learn to live this way you can have a much happier life.Get more detail about The Financial Peace Planner: A Step-by-Step Guide to Restoring Your Family's Financial Health.

Shop For Etiquette

This Book is a disappointing presentation of Miss Post's guide to Doing the Right Thing. It's not formatted, as it's been scanned by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and printed without illustrations. It's just not pretty. As the book is still in print and this is not a rarity (the benefit of buying OCR books scanned from old musty gems) you should just go ahead and buy the newest edition. It'll be a much lovelier read.

More Than a Carpenter Review

This book traces the author's intellectual quest to faith in Jesus Christ. What started as a challenge to disprove Christianity's claims, the quest turned out to be a life changing experience for the author. Once an atheist who dismissed Christianity as a mere elaborate myth, the author was challenged by some of his Christian friends to examine all the evidence for Jesus's claims. By doing that, not only did the author found out the abundance of evidence for Jesus's claims, he also accepted Christ in his life, became a believer and saw his whole life change for the good.

This book outlines the essential chapters in Christian Apologetics, a field of Christian theology that presents the historical, scientific and philosophical arguments to defend the faith and correct misconceptions about Christianity. The author deals with subjects such as the historical reliability of the scriptures, the claims of Jesus and how they cannot be disregarded as fables and how he is different from all other religious figures, the life of the apostles and disciples who tolerated persecution and martyrdom for what they saw and heard and the indirect evidence we learn from their changed lives, the amazing old testament prophecies which were fulfilled by no other than Jesus, etc...

It is a great introduction to the field of Apologetics for those who have never dealt with that subject before and for those who are seeking answers to their doubts especially concerning the figure of Jesus (it does not tackle the question of God's existence, creation, ...). The book deals with most of the arguments about Jesus in a very easy to follow style, even for the uninitiated in theology and the beginner skeptic. But don't expect this book to be exhaustive; there is a LOT more to be said and much more to be examined. It is a great way to break the ice of skepticism and you will find it an enjoyable read in your pursuits for answers. If you have questions about who Jesus was and why should you even bother to check him out, read this book. Your thirst will not be quenched but it will give you a proper outline and a good roadmap for your upcoming quest and reading.

Humility: True Greatness Top Quality

Many Christian books are nice little treatises on things you already know, already agree with, and happily nod about without much life change. Some are educational, but not necessarily transformative. C.J. Mahaney's Humility, thankfully, does not fall into either negative category. In this brief work from one of the T4G guys, readers gain knowledge, receive practical advice, and feel powerful conviction.

Normally I'd be breaking this down into what I liked, what I disliked, and a set of recommendations. I don't, however, have any real complaints, so I'm just going to share with you the three main points I love about this book.

Mahaney is wonderfully gospel-centered. C.J. recognizes that the most important aid in our humility is not a set of prescribed exercises. No, the cross is the most important way for us to become more humble. As we allow our minds to again ponder the fact that our sin is so vile, so ugly, so evil, and so costly that it could only be paid for by the brutal death of the Son of god in concert with the Father's outpouring of his wrath, we are humbled, wonderfully humbled.

Mahaney also teaches well that humility is not merely a virtue that we might want to cultivate among many others. Instead, he argues well that pride is our greatest enemy and that humility, therefore, must be our best friend. If we want joy in our Christian lives, we must cultivate humility.

This work also contains many very helpful tips. Mahaney offers practical advice in a winsome way to point Christians toward developing godly humility. The advice is the kind of stuff that average folks can really do, but not so simplistic that fairly mature believers can't learn a thing or two.

The bottom line here is that I am very fond of Humility. Mahaney did a good job. He's fun, funny, helpful, humble, and piercing. If you are a believer in Christ, you can definitely benefit from spending some time with C.J. and working to rid yourself of pride and cultivate humility.

The First Paul: Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church's Conservative Icon This instant

Paul is quoted more often by Christian conservatives than Jesus. Unfortunately, most of their quotes come from letters Paul never wrote and would have opposed if he had still been alive when they were written. John Dominic Crossan and his long-time colleague and friend, Marcus Borg have brought faith and clarity together in this remarkable exposition of the genuine letters of Paul the Apostle of the risen Christ. These letters are the earliest documents we have by a follower of Jesus. They were written to infant churches that were not yet called Christian, and were composed of Jewish followers of Jesus, Greeks (gentiles) who were believers in Judaism, Greeks (gentiles) who were seekers confused about who and what to believe in and follow, and Jews who did not believe that Jesus was Messiah. Into this welter of confusion enters Paul whose transformative experience of the crucified and living Jesus Messiah, led him to proclaim a radical new way of life and living in loving community where, in Christ, all were on a footing of radical equality.Get more detail about The First Paul: Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church's Conservative Icon.

Give It All to Him Buy Now

This is the story of salvation but presented in a different way. People like me have heard the story so many times that I have become desensitized to it. It does not connect with my heart. This nailed my heart and blew me away with God's love and the cost of his sacrifice.

Daily I stagger under the load of garbage I am dragging behind me. Years of it have crippled me and sucked all the joy out of life. Every day is a blur of never ending pain and despair. Till one day a trash man appears who says I was not designed to carry this load and he promises to take it away forever if I am willing to hand it over and let him have it.

Very effective delivery of an age old message. Sweet story.Get more detail about Give It All to Him.

Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys Decide Now

I first purchased this book for my son for Christmas not having read it myself. He read it, he read it with his wife and it changed how they relate to their boys. They told me how they switched their thinking and the whole family was better because of it. So next opportunity, I purchased another one and gave it to that family. I have just continued to do that. It's one of those books that really helps in frustrating times at the same time it brings honor to the boys, teen boys, and to young men because they are affirmed and given permission to become who they really are rather than wear a label put upon them by others that doesn't help them in anything. Let's face it, if you're perfectly parenting you don't need this book, but I don't know anyone like that.Get more detail about Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys.

Buying The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See

There is no doubt that Mr Rohr is a good person, one of the good guys on the planet doing what he can do, and being who he can be to make a lasting and positive difference for people and their experience of being human. But, that's the man.

I found his book, on the other hand, to be highly conceptual and inaccessible. I really would like to read how beautiful life and living is for Mr Rohr as a function of what he is attempting to convey. And, I am very interested in his subject matter, but found that, for me, this book fell short of the many gushing reviews.

I was disappointed, and I'm returning the book for a refund.

Purchase The Ragamuffin Gospel (Authentic Classics)

When I received this book, I had recently been through an unexpected and unwanted divorce. I had made many mistakes over the previous decade of my life and at times was overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy. While reading the introduction statements from Michael W. Smith and Rich Mullins, before I ever even got to the first chapter, I had tears streaming down my face. Just remembering it brings tears to my eyes even now. At least every chapter had something in it that spoke to me fresh the love and grace of God. Rather than having the effect of thinking it was ok to sin, I dared to rest on the promise of God's love and forgiveness which has brought peace that passes all understanding. I have truly felt free from the power of sin out of the great motivating love of Abba.Get more detail about The Ragamuffin Gospel (Authentic Classics).

Willard masterfully walks the reader through the Sermon on the Mount and many other key teachings of Jesus on the Kingdom of God and discipleship. This book truly inspired me to walk deeper with Jesus. If some of this thinking started spreading through the church, I wonder if we'd find ourselves in amidst a spiritual revival. You'll want to dive into the teachings of Jesus and live them out with everything you have once finishing this book.
Warning: The book started off slow for my taste, but after sticking with it, by the second chapter I was hooked.Get more detail about The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God.

Where To Buy Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices

After I finished reading Pagan Christianity, I went and read the negative reviews on amazon.com.

The book, by the way, is fantastic! As I was reading it, I just wanted to tell everybody what I had just read. Now that I am finished, I plan to go back and use the notes that I took to put together a presentation for my youth group (it was THAT good).

Anyway, the negative reviews made me worry that I had just wasted my time reading a biased, unreliable, poorly cited pseudo-history. I took these worries to Frank Viola's website via e-mail, and I was replied to the very next day. The reply was personal and made me feel that my questions were actually valued. In the response was a link to an article on Viola's website that addresses many of the points the negative reviewers have brought up ([...]).

It seems like it is difficult to find factual Christian books that have minimal bias and are free from manipulation and deception. Pagan Christianity is one of these rarities.

If you want to know more about what's in the book, look at the table of contents online.Get more detail about Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices.

Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know Best Quality

I actually ended up purchasing about 14 copies total of this book for our Bible study group, and I haven't been disappointed with it. It is very concise, as advertised, and is a great tool for new Christians, although one may end up finding that more information is needed. In that case, I was able to find a PDF file of Grudem's Systematic Theology that I could e-mail to everyone in the study group and use selected readings from that to supplement the smaller book being reviewed here. It has worked greatly! Grudem does have an intermediate book (not as in difficulty, but intermediate in content) called Bible Doctrine, however, if one simply pays out $10 one can have the larger one called Systematic Theology (again, I have the Systematic Theology in print, but found a free PDF and sent it to everyone in the small group and used it as supplemental reading). The one thing one may want to be aware of before purchasing is that he does take a Reformed view of the Scripture. However, once one realizes that's his bias, one can work around it. I say it's a great start with new comers to introduce them to Christianity and what Christians believe based on the Bible.Get more detail about Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know.

Every Young Man's Battle: Strategies for Victory in the Real World of Sexual Temptation (The Every Man Series) Buy Now

I just finished reading this book less than a week after receiving it from my Bible study leader...it was that good! I simply couldn't put it down, it is a great read for anyone who desires to be pure before God in the hearts, minds, and bodies. I am a 24-year old single male who has made significant strides towards purity before reading this book, so I could relate to the challenges, relive the triumphs, but also feel challenged to keep going. Admittedly, the authors do use some 'frank' language in the testimonials that can make it easy to slip up (they reference female body parts in seemingly random places), but overall it's how you process the information that you read. Will you just read the words on the page and not get a tasty visual? Consider it an exercise in your own purity!

One of the best lessons I hadn't thought of before from this book is that marriage is not the cure-all for lust; so men looking at marriage in that way certainly need to step back and realize that this is something we will likely struggle with our entire lives. You are not alone!Get more detail about Every Young Man's Battle: Strategies for Victory in the Real World of Sexual Temptation (The Every Man Series).

The Power of a Praying® Parent Book of Prayers (Power of a Praying Book of Prayers) Decide Now

In The Power of a praying Parent, Stormie Omartian writes, "I don't know how to be the perfect parent for my children," I said to God in desperation one day. "I need You to help me raise them."
"God responded by impressing on my heart the following words: 'If you are not covering your children in prayer every day, you are leaving their lives to chance.'"
"What a frightening thought!"
"Then teach me how to pray for my children the way You would have me to, Lord."
"I learned I didn't have to be a perfect parent; I just had to be a praying parent. That was something I COULD do."
In her book, Mrs. Omartian, shares specific prayers that God taught her to pray for every area of her childrens' lives. By doing so, she encourages other parents to do what they CAN do for their children--PRAY! A Bible verse and space for prayer notes are included with each prayer so that the reader can include specific prayers for their children. The Wounded Heart Right now

this book has a very religious base, as suggesting that abuse can be fixed by embracing prayer to God/Jesus. However the basis for the reaction people have to abuse and the actions of the abuser struck the chord of reality for me. Save Master's Indwelling

Anything Andrew Murray writes is excellent and five-star. However, recently, publishers have begun to scan and print without proofing. The result is missing words and letters, no proper paragraphs, or chapters, etc. The proposed intent is a more economical book, but this paperback was almost $15.00 and poorly done. Some of the Andrew Murray books (although not this one) have been rewritten into a presumably more readable text, but the fire that defines Andrew Murray is greatly lost. They are also renamed so that you can't tell if you have already purchased the original version. I like to know these things before I buy and these things aren't being presented outright nor is the publisher's page declaring the true facts being made available before purchase. Again, Andrew Murray is well worth reading, but if you are particular about these things research carefully.Get more detail about Master's Indwelling.

Cheapest The Lamb's Supper: Experiencing the Mass

This book was suggested as extra reading along with a Bible study at a church. The study was entitled "The Bible and The Mass". Everyone that had gotten hold of a copy of "The Lamb's Supper" thought it was great. My husband didn't go to the study but read the book after I said how wonderful it was. It was the first time I had gotten an explanation of the Book of Revelation that seemed to make sense. Cheap Holy Bible New King James Version Classic Companion Bible

I am using "Kindle for PC" and really enjoy having my whole library with me as I travel. I was happy to be able to buy the Bible, download, and read anytime without being on the internet.

This NKJV is great for reading, but not really for research. The navigation issues mentioned in other reviews makes it easy to get lost. This was especially true when I was reading from the iPod Touch.

There are also many places where words are missing or turned around incorrectly. For example:

Ephesians 6:10
Kindle Version: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the and in the power of His might.

Hard Copy NKJV: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

This is a major omission of the central theme of the Bible.

Buying Before I Was Born (God's Design for Sex)

I was a little scared to read this to my 7 year old daughter, but it was important to me that I was the one that told her about sex and NOT other kids in the neighborhood or at school. I wanted my daughter to know GOD'S design for sex and I also wanted to be the one to tell her about sex so that she would feel comfortable enough to come and talk to ME about any sex related questions. I will say that when I first read this, I thought there was NO WAY I could read this to her. But then I read the book "When and How to Tell Your Kids About Sex." After reading that book, I better understood the importance of telling your children about sex. I was also worried that it would make my daughter much more curious about sex, but it didn't. She took it very well and had a few questions, but the questions weren't hard ("Is that how you had me?" and "Do you HAVE to do that to have a baby?"). Anyway I definitely would suggest this book for all Christian parents to read to there children! Be the first to tell your children, because if you don't, someone else will!Get more detail about Before I Was Born (God's Design for Sex).

Buy The Secret Power of Speaking God's Word (Meyer, Joyce)

Preachers and Bible scholars state that all of mankinds' problems have an answer within the pages of the Bible. Unfortunately, it is a book composed of 66 individual books, and rarely does one know right where to look for advice on a certain problem or topic.

Joyce Meyer's book, "The Secret Power of Speaking God's Word" addresses the specifics of where to find answers to topical concerns. Got a problem with worry, or lack of faith? Meyers lists appropriate Bible verses and promises that speak to these concerns. Meyers lists many different problems involving life, faith, doubt, fear, and then gives the Bible verse that speaks to these issues.

Meyers emphasizes the power of the spoken word, believing that when one speaks the appropriate verses out loud, they help to create the conditions and attitudes you speak. Essentially, she believes they have more power spoken out loud. I don't necessarily buy into the spoken word concept; rather, I have used these topical studies of verses to immerse my mind in God's word so as to meditate and allow the concepts sink in.

The key to using a book like this is actually believing that the verses listed have the power to change one's attitude and situation. Since the verses come from God's inspired word, one must have a solid faith in God for these verses to have any lasting effect on one's mind. You can say a verse out loud a dozen times, but the words are empty if the speaker does not have faith in the words. Conversely, if one is worried or afraid, and Christ states in his word: "Don't be afraid, it is I, I am with you always", the person who believes in the risen Lord can use this verse to meditate on when he is anxious or afraid, and draw confidence from it. One's faith in the verse is only as strong as one's faith in the person who said the verse. In order for the mind to be changed, the idea or concept needs to have validity behind it to be accepted and acted upon. This book benefitted me, for I believe in the words and promises of Christ, so the words have power to change false beliefs and attitudes in my mind.

Even so, speaking or memorizing these verses is a discipline, and not a one time through and you're done concept. The topical verses cited here are to be meditated on daily until they become part of one's thought process. Constant repetition, plus faith in the words and person of Christ is the formula for success in adapting the very mind of Christ.

Certainly recommended for the person of faith who needs help or reassurance in several areas. On the contrary, this book perhaps holds no benefit for those who doubt the living existance of Christ, or doubt the words themselves.

Recommended for those who believe in the risen Lord and believe in his love and power.

Purchase Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain

I bought the kindle version of this book. I was hoping to find helpful information that would assist me in understanding someone I know who is addicted to porn. However, this book is overly clinical (with numerous citations throughout the book) and seems aimed more at a therapist or counselor than a lay person. The book is not so much about porn as it is about male brokenness. The chapters on porn are short and point out the obvious. This book would have been more helpful with stories of individuals who were addicted to porn and recovered. This book could also benefit others if it had a chapter on how to live with/deal with/help someone addicted to porn. It's a very dry read; perhaps this was just an expansion of a journal paper? Kindle comments: the tables and copyright page are impossible to read (very tiny) on a Kindle 2. There is misplaced hyphenation and extra spaces between words.
