The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow Order Now
I bought this book on Maxwell's reputation and when it arrived it was little more than a pamphlet of cute little anecdotes you could get via email chainmail. This book appears to follow a standard format of Maxwell's and he tries to use what has worked in the past. It can't make a leader and doesn't offer substantial instruction or insights.
Each chapter gives a short story that attempts to highlight the leadership quality of the chapter. Shortly thereafter a few self-examination points are discussed that nearly anyone could hvae written. This was truly useless and disappointing.
At best, it may wet the appetite to go learn more from a non-Maxwell book or serve as a conversational ice breaker at professional development courses. As a stand alone tool though, it is of little value to anyone who knows anything already about leading people.Get more detail about The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow.

Low Price Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make It into the New Testament
I was surprised to learn of the variety of interpretations of Jesus and his teachings that were found in Middle Eastern scrolls buried for nearly two thousand years. This is a very scholarly but easily understood compilation of many books that were excluded for a variety of reasons from the New Testament canon. The renowned historian Bart Ehrman and others translated these ancient scriptures from the oldest known Greek, Coptic, Arameic, and Latin texts. An exciting eye-opener for me.Get more detail about Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make It into the New Testament.

Buying Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation (Cultural Liturgies)
He's grown up a bit since 'Introducing Radical Orthodoxy', but this is still the James Smith who believes Herman Dooyeweerd is important today, and thinks Karl Barth produced an anti-secular 'bombshell' (in what countries, exactly?). He strains in this book to rehabilitate conservative Protestant theology on the other side of its true bombshell (fundamentalism), in a postmodern guise. If you're interested in philosophical theology about language, eros and the kingdom, why not read the Anglicans he's drawing from? Their English is better as well.Get more detail about Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation (Cultural Liturgies).
Buy Against All Gods: What's Right and Wrong About the New Atheism
Don't hate Phillip Johnson because he's a persuasive intellectual: There are ample and more legitimate grounds to have an aversion to him.
Of course I'm just kidding. He's the lawyer who has applied keen observation in refuting Darwinism. He's written numerous bestselling books. He's been a powerful critical thinking advocate. He helped birth the ID movement. So, seriously, he doesn't need anyone else publicly loathing him and his work.
Herein Professor Johnson (graduate of Harvard/U. of Chicago Law School; law clerk for Chief Justice Earl Warren; University of California, Berkeley professor emeritus; authored: Darwin on Trial, Reason in the Balance, The Wedge of Truth) and John Mark Reynolds (Ph.D., U. of Rochester; founder: Torrey Honors Institute; professor of philosophy Biola University) entreat readers to advance a rightful scrutiny of modern atheism. The authors advocate public discussion of worldviews and the rational pre-commitments they are tethered too; let the light of reason shine on all the facts, presuppositions, and arguments related to the debate over atheism.
The authors provide helpful rational tools and the strategies required to prevail during the debate in the marketplace of ideas. Prof. Johnson and Dr. Reynolds demonstrate that the pugnacious atheists attempt to evangelize the non-atheists with ideas that are philosophically weak and epistemically self-stultifying.
With precision and scholarly aptitude they approach the evidence and the worldview grid of unbelief as they deliver a compelling case for truth and openness which only theism rationally underwrites.

Purchase Jack Canfield's Key to Living the Law of Attraction: A Simple Guide to Creating the Life of Your Dreams
I believe that today most of us are familiar with the Law of Attraction thanks to The Secret Movie. However, the movie only scratches the surface, which is understandable because the purpose of the movie is to bring the Law of Attraction to general public, and there is not enough space to explain all the why's and give us enough guidance to apply the Law of Attraction.
For those interested in the Law of Attraction, this book is a must. Personally, I'm a big fan of Jack Canfield, for many reasons, and in this little book he does a great job explaining how the Law of Attraction really works and gives us practical tips and guidance to help us implement the principles of the Law of Attraction into our life.
The book is divided into fifteen chapters that guide you through the Law of Attraction in easy, simple steps. I particularly like practical exercises throughout the book, especially those regarding affirmations. I very much believe in the power of positive affirmations and visualization and I teach these techniques to my clients. Most of us don't realize that it's not our consciousness that influences our life. It is our subconscious mind that decides how we live, what we think and feel. Affirmations and visualizations are absolutely indispensable to reprogram our brain and change our subconscious mind so that it reflects what we truly want, need and desire, and becomes our ally.
Overall, this book is a great resource if you're just starting with the Law of Attraction and if you want to make it a part of your day-to-day life. The Key To Living The Law of Attraction will answer all your questions and help you understand what "The Secret" is really about.

Shop For What Is the Gospel? (9marks)
What is the Gospel? That's a tough question especially for someone to attempt to answer in their first attempt at a book. Greg Gilbert has had some training for sure, however, in his work with Mark Dever, so I was pretty confident that he could do it.
Actually, this is not my first experience with Gilbert answering this question. I have recently read his addendum to Proclaiming a Cross-Centered Gospel where he takes this question on and I've had the privilege to hear Gilbert speak recently on this very topic. In his addendum to the written version of the T4G2006 conference, he addressed the debate as to whether the Gospel was the announcement of the Kingdom or the message of how to enter the Kingdom. In a nutshell, he answered that it is both and that either side by itself is tragically in error. When I heard Gilbert speak, he used to book of Romans to outlines his "four crucial questions."
The questions are brought out early in this book:
1) Who made us and to whom are we accountable
2) What is our problem?
3) What is God's solution to that problem?
4) How do I come to be included in that salvation?
In this book, he does a good job showing how many passages throughout Scripture outline the gospel in the form of answering those questions. He devotes a chapter to each. First he discusses God as the Righteous Creator. With some clever satire, he shows how many Christians have reduced God to a "kind, affable, slightly dazed and needy but very loving grandfather who has wishes but no demands." Gilbert argues that in order to understand salvation, we must understand "that this loving and compassionate God is also holy and righteous, and that his is determined never to overlook, ignore, or tolerate sin."
Next, the book moves to sin. Gilbert explains the severity of sin, far beyond even the consequences of various sins one might commit. Sin is a condition; a rotting of creation, and a righteous God must judge sin.
Having covered the "bad news" Gilbert moves on to the good news: Jesus Christ the Savior. He explains the person and nature of Jesus and the significance of the doctrine of substitutionary atonement.
Next is the response of faith and repentance. Gilbert does a very good job explaining these concepts as two sides of the same coin; that to have faith is to repent. He carefully explains that true salvation will result in fruit, but that the fruit is never the cause of salvation.
Having presented the Gospel, Gilbert then goes on to discuss the Kingdom of God. He explains it in three ways: "that it is the redemptive rule of God over his people," that it has come, and that it will not be complete until Jesus returns. Ultimately he points to the church as the intended display of life of the Kingdom.
This book also contains a plea to keep the cross at the center of the message of the church. He discusses three "substitute" gospels. This is the one area of weakness that I found in this book. Its not really weak, but I would have preferred more concrete examples of where Christians have been tempted to substitute the Gospel.
Finally, Gilbert includes a challenge for his readers. First, to the non-Christian, he asks to repent and believe. To the Christian, he asks to rest and rejoice, fully believing in what Christ has done. Finally, to the church, he exhorts to speak the Gospel to the world.
As a pastor, I wish everyone in my church would read this book. It is a wonderfully simple book and pretty quick to read. However, it very precisely explains the very core of the Christian faith: the Gospel.Get more detail about What Is the Gospel? (9marks).

Grounded in the Gospel: Building Believers the Old-Fashioned Way This instant
I just finished reading the book and bought 40 copies for the teachers in our church. Packer and Parrett have provided a great case for the need to return to catechesis today, asking a fundamental question, "What must we teach?" My only suggestion would be further biblical support with other key terms (i.e. sterizo - Acts 14:22; 15:41; 16:5; 18:23; Rom 1:11; 16:25; 1 Thes 3:2) and key passages (i.e. Acts 11:26 - What did Barnabas and Saul teach that enabled the Antioch church to grow "strong" such that the Holy Spirit saw fit to send them both out (vs. Simeon, Lucius and/or Manaen)?) and ask "what did the apostles teach?" to guard against reading church history back into the first century (NT). No Turning Back A Witness to Mercy Immediately
This book is a wonderful story of a boy struggling through the darkness of sin who abruptly experiences a spiritual awakening that changes his life. This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence Best Quality
I decided to read This Momentary Marriage because I wanted to learn how to be a better husband. Pastor Piper, my favorite author, has been married for more than forty years and knows the challenges and joys of this sacred institution. What separates This Momentary Marriage from most books on marriage is that this is not an instructional manual that gives you ten tips on how to build a stronger marriage. This Momentary Marriage is a theological look at what marriage is all about - the covenant-keeping love of Christ. During the first half of the book I did feel that Piper repeated himself a few times, but I probably felt that way because I have had my nose in so many of his books lately. This Momentary Marriage hits on a number of topics such as leadership, submission, hospitality, romance, children, anger, divorce, remarriage and to my surprise, singleness. Piper covers singleness in chapters 9-10, and it really needs to be read by not just singles, but those who are married. We tend to exalt marriage in unChristlike ways and fail to see the even greater blessings that will come to all Christians when we pass from this world. Of course, as always, Piper has scattered Scripture throughout the book. Each chapter starts off with a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison. This Momentary Marriage concludes with a few words of thanks, a Scripture index, person index, subject index and a note on Desiring God resources. If you are married, engaged, hope to be married or called to remain single, I highly recommend this book. It is definitely the best reading I have done on this topic.Get more detail about This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence.

Cheap The Prayers and Personal Devotions of Mother Angelica
Raymond Arroyo has another wonderful book about Mother Angelica. In this case, he has collected "a repository of her favorite prayers" (p x).
It is hard not to imagine Mother saying these prayers as you read them. Some of the prayers are for times of trial or suffering. And every time I think of an enclosed nun trying to start a television station with only $200 and the Holy Spirit I certainly know she went through times of true suffering.
Mother Angelica couldn't walk for years until her miracle. Yet her faith sustained her. And she would have had need for "A Prayer for Strength" which starts out "Love is a sublime prison...Your Spirit within me forms an invisble wall that protects me" (p 27). Isn't that beautiful?
I was greatly moved by this collection of prayers.Get more detail about The Prayers and Personal Devotions of Mother Angelica.

Liberty or death. This was the choice the people of Scotland in the 13th century faced if they rose up against their English ruler. Most would say it was no choice at all. Many of the Scottish nobles were English supporters. Few could be expected to rise up against the numerically overwhelming English army. The Five Languages of Apology Best Quality
The back of the book makes it sound like a good book... but after inspection inside, it really missed the mark.
While people may be looking for one type of Apology, we should not direct our Apology to that type, but we should be using ALL 5! A true apology should require and entail ALL 5 of them!
That is why this book missed the mark... it based it upon the 5 Love Language which says to hit their language of the person you are trying to love...

Jesus said the resurrection is on the last day, not before the tribulation. The rapture occurs before the tribulation, not the resurrection. Lowest Price If God Is Good: Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil
Contrary to what might be expected, I look back on experiences that at the time seemed especially desolating and painful with particular satisfaction. Indeed, I can say with complete truthfulness that everything I have learned in my seventy-five years in this world, everything that has truly enhanced and enlightened my existence, has been through affliction and not through happiness, whether pursued or attained. ~ Malcolm Muggeridge
My dad survived throat cancer and dealt with a lot of suffering from the chemotherapy. When he first became ill I remember asking God why he would give my dad throat cancer when my father is a preacher and missionary and has served God for most of his life. To be frank, I felt it was unfair. Now that his cancer has returned and is in his lungs he is again going through chemotherapy. As many have experienced, I again questioned God and also felt overwhelmed with the world's suffering which mostly seems born of the evil actions of mankind. So with this happening in my life I read "If God Is Good" with a troubled heart.
While many have found this book comforting, I found it unsettling. Each time the author mentioned another person suffering or another individual being murdered or abused I felt myself becoming angry. Then Randy Alcorn would explain the reasons for the tragedy and I'd feel a little better. This went on through the entire book right up until the last chapter. I literally had to force myself to read this book because it dealt so deeply with things I have been thinking about recently.
If you wish for a peaceful world some of the realities in this book will frustrate you as they did me. Randy Alcorn presents case after case of evil's destructive influence. Then Randy says: "If God allowed less evil in the world, there would also be less good." While this is hard to believe at first it does start to make some sense as you finish the book.
So while reading this book did not put my mind at ease, I have lots to think about. No matter what anyone says about evil and suffering I've decided that the only thing we can really do is to accept that bad things are going to happen and that somehow we have to trust that God knows what he is doing when he allows illness, early death and grief.
When I look back at my own short life there were many times when I suffered emotionally and I can truly say it was for the best. Through suffering I've become a better person even though at the times I was in pain I thought nothing worse could ever happen to me. In retrospect, all the bad things I thought were happening to me actually turned out to be the best things that could ever happen. If I had married the man I thought I was supposed to marry my life would have turned out rather different. So while the rejection made me feel like the world was ending, now I am totally thankful for what happened. When you are in a bad situation you may think the pain will never end, but it does eventually even if it takes years.
